Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness was designated as a wilderness area in 1980 and covers an area of 653,179 acres, with one fifth of it covered by ice.

Just south of Juneau, the Stephens Passage is one of the straightest sections of the Inside Passage. This 105-mile channel cuts through the Alexander Archipelago, nestled between Admiralty Island on the west and the mainland and Douglas Island on the east. On deck is the best place to be while traversing this passage, as Admiralty Island is home to more bears than people, and the spruce and hemlock forests extend all the way to the water's edge. The Stephens Passage is renowned for being one of the top whale-watching spots in Alaska, and it also hosts a abundant population of Steller sea lions. As the ship sails by, flocks of gulls and guillemots take flight, creating a cacophony of sound. George Vancouver named this passage in 1794 after it was charted by Joseph Whidbey.

Decision Passage is located at the western end of the Sumner Strait in Southeastern Alaska. It is bounded on the north by Kuiu Island and Cape Decision, where a lighthouse was built in 1932. This passage is used when traveling to or from the historic community of Sitka on the west coast of Baranof Island, which was once known as New Archangel, a Russian fortress town.

Wrangell Island is situated in the heart of the Tongass National Rain Forest within the Alexander Archipelago. It receives an average of 80” (203 cm) of rainfall per year. The city of Wrangell, an authentic Alaskan frontier town, is located at the northern end of the island, close to the mouth of the Stikine River. The history of Wrangell is deeply intertwined with the Tlingit people, the fur trade, and the gold rush. The Stikine River trade route brought the Tlingit people here thousands of years ago, as evidenced by the numerous petroglyphs at Petroglyph Beach State Historic Site and Totem Park. Notable attractions in the region include the Stikine River, Shakes Glacier, and Anan Creek Bear Observatory. Anan Creek is particularly renowned for its large pink salmon run, which attracts a significant number of brown and black bears. Wrangell was named after Ferdinand Petrovich Wrangel, a Russian explorer and administrator of the Russian-America Company in the mid-1800s.

Stikine Strait is a scenic channel situated in the Alexander Archipelago of Alaska. It lies between Zarembo Island and Woronkofski and Etolin Islands, near the mouth of the Stikine River to the south of Wrangell. The strait was first recorded on a Russian chart in 1848 as Stakhin Strait and has since been spelled differently on various charts.

The Behm Canal is a 108-mile waterway in Southeast Alaska. It connects the Clarence Strait to the Revillagigedo Island and forms part of the Inside Passage. The canal was named after Magnus von Behm, the former governor of Kamchatka, by George Vancouver in 1793. Misty Fjords National Monument, spanning over 2.2 million acres, is often compared to Yosemite National Park by naturalist John Muir. It is a misty wilderness with towering granite cliffs that go down 1,000 feet below the water's surface. Misty Fjords receives heavy rainfall and is covered in green mosses and lichens. It is home to various wildlife such as mountain goats, bears, wolves, sea lions, eagles, and whales. The Tlingit people have a long history in this region, as evidenced by the pictographs found along the fjord.

Prince Rupert is a starting point for travelers heading to Haida Gwaii, Vancouver, or Alaska. The town offers attractions such as Cow Bay, the Museum of Northern British Columbia, the totem carving house, and sunken gardens. Wildlife enthusiasts can join a local boat for whale-watching, hike Butze Rapids, or take a scenic flight. The region is known for its high concentration of grizzly bears, with the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary being the first protected area in Canada for these animals. Named after a governor of the Hudson's Bay Company, Prince Rupert was founded in 1910. It serves as the northern terminus of the Canadian National Railway and an important port for goods bound for Alaska.

Grenville Channel, situated off the northern British Columbia coast, is a protected shipping lane that stretches between Pitt Island and the mainland. Ships of various sizes traverse this channel, which is flanked by towering mountains on both sides. Noteworthy peaks, Mt. Batchellor and Mt. Saunders, can be found halfway through the channel. Additionally, there are Indian Reserves and Marine Parks nestled within the surrounding mountains and narrow waterways.

Whale Channel, located in British Columbia's Inside Passage, presents a picturesque waterway that separates Gil Island from Princess Royal Island. This diversion from the main shipping lane showcases snow-capped mountain ranges and abundant marine life. It is positioned roughly equidistantly between Prince Rupert and the First Nations village of Klemtu.

The Princess Royal Channel serves as a divide between the largest island along the British Columbia coast and the mainland. This remote area lies approximately midway between Bella Bella and Prince Rupert. Captain Charles Duncan named Princess Royal island in 1788, honoring his ship of the same name. Though the island itself lacks inhabitants, there are two small villages within the channel: the First Nations community of Klemtu on Swindle Island and Hartley Bay on the mainland. The region teems with wildlife, including Kermode, black, and grizzly bears, deer, wolves, and foxes. Golden and bald eagles nest in the vicinity, along with the endangered marbled murrelet. Abundant marine life, such as salmon, elephant seals, whales, orcas, and dolphins, populate the surrounding waters.

Cormorant Island, located on the inactive Alert Bay volcanic belt, is home to Alert Bay, the oldest northern community in Vancouver Island. This 0.69-square mile island combines aboriginal and pioneer culture and offers a rich history, stunning views, and diverse wildlife. The harbor still holds remnants of a fish-salting plant from the 1800s, while the U'mista Cultural Centre houses the renowned Potlach Collection. The surrounding waters are filled with seabirds, humpback, orca, and gray whales, sea lions, and white-sided dolphins. Alert Bay was named after HMS Alert, a Royal Navy ship that conducted surveys in the region in 1860.

Johnstone Strait, a well-protected shipping route, stretches 68 miles/110 km along the northeast shore of Vancouver Island, between the island and mainland British Columbia. It connects the broad Georgia Strait to Discovery Passage through a narrow channel. Vancouver named the strait after James Johnstone, the master of one of his tenders who discovered Vancouver Island to be an island during a survey expedition in 1792. The strait is home to a large pod of orcas during the summer.

Seymour Narrows, a 3-mile/5 km stretch of the Discovery Channel, is known for its strong tidal currents. The narrows have an average width of 750 meters and experience severe Venturi effect during extreme tides, resulting in increased velocity up to 15 knots. The area was once dangerous due to Ripple Rock, a shallow obstruction that caused the loss of 119 ships and 114 lives. However, in 1958, Ripple Rock was successfully detonated in the largest commercial, non-nuclear explosion recorded in North America. Despite this, navigating Seymour Narrows still requires skill and technical expertise, as it is dependent on tidal and other conditions.
