Experience an incredible encounter with the Tasman Glacier, New Zealand's largest glacier. Discover the ever-changing glacial landscape as you sail across the Tasman Glacier Terminal Lake with an experienced guide. Global warming and other climatic processes have led to the retreat of New Zealand glaciers. The Tasman Glacier, currently 17 miles long and 1965 feet deep, is melting and calving rapidly. The terminal lake is expanding as a result. Icebergs of all shapes and sizes break off from the glacier and plunge into the growing lake. Lateral moraines on both sides of the lake remind us of the glacier's previous grandeur during the last ice age, which ended in 1890.

Start your adventure by walking the headland track around the Matiatia headland and past Owhanake Bay. This part of the walk takes nearly two hours and offers stunning views of the Hauraki Gulf Islands, Great Barrier Island, and the Coromandel. Keep an eye out for sea birds, native plants, and if you're lucky, you might even spot orcas or dolphins. Today, it is home to a museum showcasing the world's largest Maori ceremonial war canoes and the Waitangi Visitor Center, which provides an overview of the Bay of Islands' history.
