While adult giraffes are relatively safe from predation, baby calves are vulnerable to lions, leopards, spotted hyenas, and wild dogs. Giraffes often gather in groups to eat or socialize for a few hours before separating to graze individually. Male giraffes establish social hierarchies through "neckings," which are combat bouts where the neck is used as a weapon. Based on these displays, dominant males gain mating rights to females, who then take on the responsibility of raising their young.

Its success in the wild is attributed to its opportunistic hunting behavior, adaptability to different habitats, impressive speed of up to 36 miles per hour, ability to climb trees with heavy prey, and unmatched stealth. Spotting these elusive animals is highly valued in the Masai Mara.

At Ol Donyo Wuas, guests have the unique opportunity to observe wildlife up close and personal. The lodge's "log-jam" hide, constructed from heavy logs piled five feet high and three feet thick, provides a safe vantage point to view animals at the nearby waterhole. Sitting at eye-level with massive tusker elephants or admiring the knobby knees of giraffes is a privilege that few will ever experience.
